One of the foods we love to eat in Australia, is the "Pie Floater".
The "Pie Floater" - is a meat pie, floating in a big bowl of hot pea soup. The meat pie itself, is usually turned upside down. Most Aussie's like to add tomato sauce but a variety of condiments, can be added to the dish.
Worcestershire sauce, pepper, salt, mint sauce and quite commonly, vinegar. All of these things, make for a tasty experience.
The "Pie Floater" is believed to have originated from the English. In England, dumplings in soup were called "Floaters". The pie floater became popular in Adelaide, when the very first mobile "Pie Cart" was established.
Between the years 1915 to 1942, nine "Pie Cart's" had been established around Adelaide.
They became an icon around Adelaide. After a night out on the town, on a chilly night, people would gather at the "Pie Cart". The cart would sell an array of foods. Hot dogs, donuts, rolls, hamburgers and drinks. If you needed a late night snack, this was the place to be.
The National Trust of Australia, said that it was a "South Australian Heritage Icon" and in 2003 it was recognised as such. There was also another in New South Wales, that was recognised around the same time.
Shortly after this, there was some talk of shutting them down. I never really understand the facts behind why?
I know that the development of the new tram system, was getting ready to take place. The tram tracks would have needed more room and the "Pie Cart's", were in the way.
I remember at the time, this created a huge stir amongst the people of Adelaide. To be honest, i am really not sure what happened to them after that but i do know, that they are not there anymore.
You will find the people of Adelaide, still make a pie floater in their home. It is just part of the Australian way of life!
Give it a try - I am sure you will love it!
